Most of my life I have been aware that I have grown up in a picture postcard. The North Olympic Peninsula has 20+
waterfalls you can hike to, a million acre park where, depending on your abilities you can spend days alone, with
only the native wildlife for company, and beaches. Did I mention the incredibly isolated and dramatically windswept
beaches? And, until about six years ago, we have never counted werewolves and vampires as part of the local
fauna!
Now, besides living minutes from different park entrances we live in an area called "Twilight." Vampires and
werewolves DO roam the woods at night, protecting the innocents in the city and guarding age-old territorial
agreements.
About an hour west of Port Angeles is a place called Forks, home of Bella Star, her dad and the Cullen family, Once
a booming logging town, but with the spotted owl brouhaha of the 1990's Forks had fallen on hard times. Further
west on the reservation lives a group of young men who are different from others in the tribe. I think the best way to
describe it would be a genetic predisposition: during times of danger to the tribe some of the young men become
shape shifters. And as the Cullens (the resident vampire family) become close to Bella the gene is triggered and
werewolves protect their tribe AND Bella, a long-time friend of tribal members. This small logging town was one of
my favorite surfing spots, once a secret but no more-the beach at La Push.
For the past thirteen years I have been working with wood and metal. I am a huge movie fan but hey-I'm a dude-I
didn't "get it" until I saw the first "Twilight" movie. I was starting to dig the whole vampire/human/shapeshifter love
triangle and began my research at Bella Italia, where Bella and Edward had their first date and she ordered the
mushroom ravioli. Incidentally, last year, because of the movie, Bella Italia's owner said they went through 4000
pounds of mushrooms, serving up this most requested meal. I ordered the preordained dinner, mushroom ravioli
and a Coke. Sitting there, enjoying the meal, soaking up the atmosphere while reading the first book in the series I
fell in love all over again with my home and the story of Bella and Edward.
After multiple drawings I created some sketches I felt captured everything-our forests, beaches and everlasting love.
I wanted the style to be a piece of art that would be recognized by the cognoscenti as coming from the heart of the
Olympic Peninsula and be from my heart, as well. The colors had to be black with blood red overtones-with sort of a
Gothic look to it. The table top would have a red apple with two fang marks in it. Sitting on top of a bed of poetry.
Covered and sealed with a glass top. A table that must reflect the story. A small side table would be perfect-small
but commanding attention when you walked into the room.
An array of quotes and sayings would be carved all over the table. First with the top then the sides and even the
legs. With one more surprise, wooden letters E&B underneath the table top. Along with a metal plaque, Dated,
signed and numbered. Last but not least, a document authentication will be given to you.
